Future Of Funancials: June Blog Update

Blogging · June 5, 2012

It’s been far too long.

Several months have gone by since I last updated you all on the progress of this blog. This sort of blog-related post is actually what I’ve come to enjoy most when visiting others’ sites so I apologize for the lack of updation. Sure I’ve opened up a little by telling you 22 Things You Didn’t Know About Me, but that’s not enough.

In order for Funancials to be successful, I must engage readers and maintain a level of transparency. The businesses I respect most are the ones that are open about the costs of doing business and the way they make money (off of me). Nothing irks me more than businesses that lack full disclosure and prey on the ill-informed.

With that said, how about I let you all in, once again, on the business of blogging?

June Blog Update

My life feels like it’s moving at the speed of sound. Important undertakings that I thought would be years away have suddenly moved to the forefront. As amazing as these life events are, my blog has suffered because of this – but only slightly. Let me explain:

Alexa Ranking

Ever since I fell below 200k, I have given little thought to my Alexa Ranking. A few months ago I fell to my lowest point of 108k but have steadily risen to my present ranking of 142k. Although Alexa isn’t all that important, I’m not thrilled about moving in the wrong direction.

Visitors

On the contrary, my number of visitors is moving in the right direction. Funancials is being read by more people than ever before. To be exact, I saw a 7% increase in traffic. Here is the breakdown of my visitors:

  • 67% Search Traffic
  • 18% Referral Traffic
  • 11% Direct Traffic
  • 4% Campaigns

Compared to my December Blog Earnings Report, these figures have changed dramatically. I have continued to see a rise in search traffic thanks to recent events. The Facebook IPO has lead to many investors googling the question: How Does Facebook Make Money? This has been a monster post for me. I should probably take this as an opportunity to add links to other posts, but that would be way too smart for me.

I’m obviously pleased about the increase in traffic, but I’m not-so-pleased about the shift in traffic sources. I plan to comment more regularly to draw more direct traffic, or what I call reciprocal traffic.

Earnings

I have continued to make money blogging. It’s certainly a great feeling to be monetarily compensated for doing something you would gladly do for free. If only we could all enjoy our day jobs as much as we enjoy blogging…(sigh)

In the coming months, I will be trying to diversify my blogging income streams. I plan on changing the look of the site and making some room for ads. If they ever feel intrusive, please let me know.

Readers: If you have a blog, how have the last few months been for you?

Important Disclosure

I'm a big believer in transparency. As such, you should know that I make money from this blog. Weird, I know. The way I make money is simple: I occasionally link to products and companies that I believe provide tremendous value. If you choose to sign up, I may receive a small payout. This payout comes at no additional cost to you and, trust me, it's small. I'm in no position to quit my day job. Please do not spend any money on these products unless you feel you need them or that they will help you achieve your goals.
