Observations From Nawlins

Uncategorized · February 28, 2012

One of my New Year’s resolutions was to begin keeping a diary of everything I do; but because diary’s are probably the least heterosexual thing you can have, I must document everything on my blog. If you’re looking for personal finance tips, I recommend you return in a few days.

A little over a week ago Miss Blinkin and I flew to New Orleans to visit with her family. The purpose of our gathering was to honor her sister who was being presented in a krewe. Never heard of a krewe? Neither had I. It’s an organization that puts on a parade or a ball for the carnival season. And…it’s a big deal.

Here are my observations from New Orleans:

  • I was relatively bullish about our economy until I saw the nonsense that was Mardi Gras. Lots of good decisions being made. I have zero optimism in regards to the future of America.
  • Never buy beads. It’s kind of like buying bottled water; if bottled water were constantly being tossed at your head.
  • I only saw 3 boobs on Bourbon Street. 2 were painted on so she appeared to be wearing a tight shirt. The third, after reexamination, wasn’t actually a boob. It was almost as though while she danced, her fatty tissue actually trickled towards her elbow forming a teet-like trim.
  • There were a few street performers and sidewalk artists that were phenomenal. Just a reminder that you can find value anywhere.
  • I hope my blog is the Will Ferrell of blogs. Will Ferrell was on the first float of the Krewe of Bacchus parade. Whenever you see the guy, you can’t help but smile. That’s the kind of effect I want to have.
  • Oysters are heavenly.
  • Restaurants use the term “brunch” loosely. Brunch shouldn’t cost $70/person and consist of steak, shrimp, and bananas foster.
  • One of the best parts of the trip came when I was relaxing in the hotel room. A default menu pops up when turning on the TV. Your selection consisted of Kiplinger Personal Finance Tips and other programs. The 2 minute tutorials taught you things such as why you shouldn’t want a large tax refund. I was very excited to see this slight nudge.
  • New Orleans is an entirely different city when you’re 26 versus when you’re 12.

Have you ever been to New Orleans? If so, what did you enjoy most?
