5 People That Will Make You Smarter

Investing · September 14, 2011

There are very few people I think are smart. No offense to anyone reading this, but you aren’t smart. If you’re reading my blog, you’re not smart. I’m not smart, so no one that cares about what I have to say is smart.

This might be a little harsh but my view of smart is different than most. I have been referred to as smart but I can’t fully agree with the compliment.

I know a lot. Some useful, some completely irrelevant; but everything that I know has been learned from other people. I read and I regurgitate. I rarely create and develop my own hypotheses and theorems. That’s what smart people do.

If you consider yourself to be one of these creators then stop reading (unless you’re here for the entertainment aspect of this blog). If you recognize that there is so much you have to learn then continue reading.

There’s nothing wrong with not being the kind-of-smart I’m referring to. Very few people are.

Here are the few that I classify as smart. You will be able to learn a great deal from the following fellows.

George Soros

Known for breaking the Bank of England after his speculation of the British Government devaluing the pound.

Doesn’t have a blog to follow (unfortunately) but his thoughts appear everywhere.

Bill Gross

Founded and runs PIMCO. His thoughts are more readily accessible. The 1st of every month he posts an Investment Outlook but does so in such a way for the common man to understand. Could be mistaken for David Spade.

Warren Buffett

Doesn’t need an introduction. He has more biographies than Michael Jordan.

Fred Wilson

Mentioned him previously as he coined the term Freemium. Genius Venture Capitalist that finds enough time to blog (every day).

Mark Cuban

This might surprise a lot of people. His cocky demeanor may annoy you (understandable), but you can’t deny his business sense. He has a lot of original ideas which I respect.

These certainly aren’t the only smart people on the planet. I love Steve Jobs – but he doesn’t have a blog that I follow and he’s more tech than finance.

Once you begin echoing the voices of these 5 men, people will be impressed with how much you know; however, you will realize just how little you do.

Important Disclosure

I'm a big believer in transparency. As such, you should know that I make money from this blog. Weird, I know. The way I make money is simple: I occasionally link to products and companies that I believe provide tremendous value. If you choose to sign up, I may receive a small payout. This payout comes at no additional cost to you and, trust me, it's small. I'm in no position to quit my day job. Please do not spend any money on these products unless you feel you need them or that they will help you achieve your goals.
