A Blinkin Thanksgiving

In 1863, I established the last Thursday of November as the annual celebration of Thanksgiving. In 1939 — during the Great Depression — President Franklin Delano Roosevelt moved the holiday up a week with the support of merchants as an economic stimulus of sorts, creating a longer holiday shopping season (black Friday anybody?). A public outcry ensued, with some families holding two celebrations: “Franksgiving” on the third Thursday, and Thanksgiving on the fourth. In 1941, Congress passed a bill making the fourth Thursday of November the official holiday. Roosevelt signed the bill into law.
